CANTERBURY RACE 7 PREVIEW

By Phil Purser

Tommy Berry (pictured) rides website each way tip Queenian tomorrow.
Canterbury is the venue for racing in Sydney tomorrow and eight races are set down for decision, with the first at 12.25pm and the last at 4.50pm.

On a day of non-black type racing, all races are worth the standard $85,000 in total prizemoney, with the winner collecting a handy $48,750 – which would take you a long way in a jet.

The Canterbury track will probably be rain affected, but with a fine day today it is already back to a dead 5 now, so if we work on that rating, we should be pretty close to the mark.

My thoughts on the race are:
HORSE
COMMENT
BAY WINDOW
Two runs back from 38 weeks off have been okay, but he’s on a seven day back-up here and the last time he was on a seven day back-up (10/9/11 to 17/9/11) he went like a mule that had been hit by a Kenworth truck, then when the mule stood up it got hit by a low flying Cessna that was crop dusting. Not for me.
SOLEDAD
Had every possible chance last start and was pathetic to the line at $1.75. Won’t meet a weaker bunch than this - but he’s very short again.
MERENSKY REEF
Never fired a shot when resuming from 32 weeks off on 21/7/12 behind Coup Ay Tee and Soledad, so should need this run too.
TINDAL
Not a bad horse on a given day, but finding the “given day” is difficult. Place hope at a squillion to one, well not quite that rough.
QUEENIAN
Hasn’t won for ages - and he’s limited - but he did have 44 weeks off between 20/8/11 and 23/6/12, so that helps explain that stint out of the winning list. He can’t win races if he’s convalescing in a grassy paddock pushing out zeds and repairing injured bones. Three runs back from a spell have only been fair but two of those three have been against Soledad and a) he meets Soledad much better at the weights tomorrow, b) he’s now fitter and c) blinkers go on for the first time in his life tomorrow, so he must be ready to rock and roll, as the trainer has waited for him to get fit enough before applying them.
KAYPERS
Going for three in a row and has won at Canterbury multiple times, so has an each way chance.
GENERAL’S SNIPER
Better suited in mares grade.
AL’S GOLD
Not a bad horse on a given day and he’s got each way claims here, as he likes Canterbury and dead tracks.
ISLE BE READY
Only won two of 17 - so impossible to have here.
FLIGHT COMMAND
Fitter for one run back, but the class will test.

CONCLUSION: I’d back Queenian each way.

Go Back
